William G. Carter
William
G. Carter is a fifth-generation Oregonian. He grew up in the
Rogue Valley and graduated from Medford High School in 1958.
He attended the University of Oregon, receiving his Bachelor
of Science degree in 1962 and his Law Degree in 1965.
He was a prosecutor in Douglas County for three years and
since then has engaged in a general trial practice in Medford.
He has served as Medford's Municipal Judge, done legal work
for the cities of Ashland, Central Point and Gold Hill, represented
State Farm Insurance Company in auto claims for a number of
years, and engaged in an extensive family law practice. He
currently specializes in mediation and arbitration and also
serves as a pro tem Circuit Judge for Jackson County.
He is active in bar association matters, and has served:
- As
President of the Jackson County (Oregon) bar association,
- On
the State Professional Responsibility Board (1993-95, Chair
1995)
- On
the Minimum Continuing Legal Education Board (1995-97, Chair
1997)
- On
the Disciplinary Board of the Oregon State Bar (1998-00,
Regional Chair 2000)
- On
the Oregon State Bar Board of Governors (2001-04)
- As
President of the Oregon State Bar (2004)
- On the Oregon State Bar House of Delegates (2005-07)
- On the Professional Liability Fund Board of Directors (2008-Present)
He and his wife, Barbara, have two children: Elizabeth, who
lives in Eugene, and Andrew, who lives in Lake Oswego, and
two grandchildren. His brother, Robert, obtained his law degree
from Yale University and was for many years a professor at Rutgers Law School in New Jersey.
